Your questions, in practice · India
Should you request a restaurant invoice?
Yes. Ask for an itemised invoice when paying, preferably addressed to the company. It should identify the restaurant, date, items, amounts and tax charged. Add the business purpose and attendees to your expense claim.
Can restaurant meal VAT be recovered?
Restaurant meal tax is generally excluded or restricted in this country. A business invoice alone therefore does not establish recovery. Exceptions depend on the activity and statutory circumstances; keep the gross invoice and identify the tax separately for accounting treatment.
Can VAT on expense claims be recovered?
The claim groups amounts; supplier invoices support tax treatment. Assess each cost separately by use, the company’s tax status and applicable exclusions. A mileage payment is not a fuel invoice and does not by itself create a tax credit.
Who recovers the tax: the company or the person who paid?
The person who advanced the expense is repaid the business amount paid. The company then claims any tax recovery to which it is entitled. Do not reduce the employee’s repayment by tax they actually advanced.
Must the invoice name the company?
Request an invoice with the company name and details for purchases made on its behalf. Include the tax number required in the relevant country. The card used does not determine the invoice recipient; ask the supplier to correct errors.
Can a till receipt support VAT recovery?
Only if the document contains the details needed to support VAT recovery. A receipt showing only a total is insufficient. Request an itemised invoice with the supplier, date, items and tax amounts, and have the company identification completed as required.
What if a receipt does not show VAT?
Ask the supplier for a complete or corrected invoice. Until then, record the amount paid without claiming unsupported VAT. If the supplier lawfully charges no VAT, for example under an exemption scheme, there is no tax to recover.
Why can deductible expenses have nonrecoverable VAT?
Deducting an expense reduces taxable profit. Recovering invoice tax follows different conditions, including tax registration, use and exclusions. A cost may therefore be deductible while its nonrecoverable tax remains part of the accounting expense.
